Bali imposes 50 push-up punishment for violating mask rules

Get ready to do 15 push-ups as punishment if you are caught violating mask rules in Bali. The beautiful island destination in Indonesia is taking all the precautions to save themselves from the highly contagious COVID-19 virus. The island started fining people for mask violations back in August. While locals follow the rules, foreigners often tend to ignore these.

Local media reported that 90 per cent of COVID-19 violations in Bali were from tourists. The local police said that they are now tired of listening to excuses. The police also said that most times the offenders say they were not aware of the rule or that forgot it or that the mask was wet or damaged!

Indonesia fines around $7 per person for not wearing a face mask. In Bali, if a person is caught without a mask and is unable to pay fines, then he/she will have to do 50 push-ups; if found wearing masks incorrectly, 15 push-up punishment is enforced.

Bali has been planning to open its border for oversea tourists since September last year, but the process of reopening was delayed because of the increasing number of Coronavirus cases. On January 20, Indonesia reported nearly 12000 new COVID-19 cases.

Though the tourism sector is struggling in Bali, the authorities are not ready to take any health risk and are considering deporting foreign tourists who don’t comply with the mask regulations.

Till date, Indonesia has recorded 940000 COVID-19 positive cases and over 26000 deaths but seems like the numbers will stop soon as the country has approved emergency use of the CoronaVac vaccine. The Indonesian government has made the vaccine free to all its citizens.
