Gulmarg sees season's first snowfall, the famous gondola opens

Gulmarg in Kashmir saw season’s first snowfall last week, bringing cheer to a rather dull year for tourism here. What added to the joy for the locals as well as the travellers is the famous Gulmarg gondola that also started operations on Sunday. One of the highest cable cars in the world, the gondola is now operational after a gap on six months; the Gulmarg–Kongdoori section of the gondola ride is now welcoming travellers and saw enthusiasts making a beeline for a ride on Sunday itself.

The revenue on day 1 of its operations raked in INR 78000 reportedly. Last year, the gondola rides earned INR 30 crores for the government here. A ticket for the same costs between INR 740 to INR 950, reaching a maximum altitude of more than 12000 ft.

The gondola in Gulmarg is one of the most sought-after attractions in Kashmir, and takes one over pine covered forests in the stunning Himalayas. For now, the gondola would operate only on weekends; moreover, masks and all other safetly protocols are an essential to get aboard one. Those in-charge of the operations have stated that social distancing norms need to be followed here as well; furthermore, gondola cabins would also be sanitised after every round.
