Soon: Pan-India structure to promote India as a safe travel destination

In a welcome move, a pan-India structure to ensure travellers’ safety would soon be rolled out. Rupinder Brar, Additional Director General, Ministry of Tourism, also added that a study on the same was commissioned by the Bureau of Police Research and Development and the findings would be used to put a structure in place. She also maintained that even as the police forces continue to make efforts for tourists’ safety, there are gaps that need to be filled.

She further commented, “As we take the narrative of Atithi Devo Bhava forward in the more human part of it, we need to ensure that we have structures that can actually make a traveller feel that he or she is in a safe environment.”

Ms Brar, during her address, also added that the Ministry is now focused on addressing the softer parts of travel, such as safety and overall travel experiences, so that India is seen as a safe country by travellers.

She elaborated on the same and added that, “When somebody comes for tourism, he or she will typically come for a few days. In those few days, how should we bring forth an experience that is not just memorable, but also compels the person to come back, or to tell their family and friends back home, that, this India is a country that needs to figure in their bucket list. I think that’s where the stakeholders and the government need to work together.”

She maintained that while the infrastructure for tourism in the country has seen ample growth and continues to progress, India needs to be perceived as a safe destination to travel to. She added that the authorities are now keen to work on the branding initiatives for the same.
